Cherbourg State School is located in the heart of the Cherbourg community (shire population 1,500), six kilometres South of Murgon, 170 kilometres North West of Brisbane. It is part of the Darling Downs West Education district.
The community consists of a school, day care, aged care and various health facilities. It has residential and rural areas, and some local small industry and agriculture. Visitors may be attracted to its historical precinct (the Ration Shed), and an Indigenous Knowledge Centre located in the town area.
The community historically is made up of many tribal groups, initially brought together under ‘The Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the sale of Opium Act, 1897'. Whilst being grouped together under difficult circumstances, new bonds formed, and now the community proudly voices its unity in ‘Many tribes, One community’. Some community members are employed locally, while some travel for employment.
